In Riven, though it was supposedly harder, at least the puzzles and clues were obviously puzzles and clues and not interface bugs and misc background detail. Or, in the case of things like that combination lock, it's actually easier to just try every combination until you get the right one. Then, at some point, with no reason or clue to make the connection, when you're looking at a safe combination you're supposed to say "Wait! How about if I try putting in the number of mailboxes on the island!" And you do, and it works.
